How to get a India visa photo that passes

  1. 01

    Take the photo

Stand about 2 ft (60 cm) in front of a plain, light wall. Ask someone to take the photo from about 4 ft (1.2 m) away with the camera at face height. Use daylight from a window in front of you, not overhead light. Take off your glasses, keep both eyes open and your mouth closed.

  2. 02

    Check the crop

The tool finds your face, sizes your head and makes the background plain automatically. If a check turns amber or red, drag or zoom until it turns green.

  3. 03

    Download or print

Download the digital photo for online forms, or the 4 × 6 in sheet to print at a photo kiosk. Print at actual size and cut along the grey lines.

Questions people ask

What size is an India visa photo?

The upload must be a square JPEG between 10 KB and 300 KB. Printed photos are 2 × 2 inches. The download from this page is 600 × 600 px inside those limits.

Is this for the e-Visa?

Yes. The same square photo works for the e-Visa and the regular visa form. Some missions allow up to 1 MB for the e-Visa, so a file under 300 KB is safe for both.

What background is allowed?

A plain white or light-coloured background with no shadows and no border.

Can I wear glasses?

Tinted glasses are not allowed. Clear glasses can cause glare, so taking them off is the safest choice.

Is this the same as an Indian passport photo?

No. Indian passport photos have a different size. Use the India passport photo page for those.
