How to get a UK passport photo that passes
- 01
Take the photo
Stand about 2 ft (60 cm) in front of a plain, light wall. Ask someone to take the photo from about 4 ft (1.2 m) away with the camera at face height. Use daylight from a window in front of you, not overhead light. Take off your glasses, keep both eyes open and your mouth closed.
- 02
Check the crop
The tool finds your face, sizes your head and makes the background plain automatically. If a check turns amber or red, drag or zoom until it turns green.
- 03
Download or print
Download the digital photo for online forms, or the 4 × 6 in sheet to print at a photo kiosk. Print at actual size and cut along the grey lines.

Questions people ask
What size is a UK passport photo?
45 mm high by 35 mm wide. Your head, from chin to crown, must be between 29 mm and 34 mm high.
What background does a UK passport photo need?
A plain cream or light grey background with clear contrast to your face. No objects, other people or shadows behind you.
How recent must the photo be?
It must have been taken in the last month. You need a new photo for each new passport, even if you still look the same.
Can I use this photo for an online application?
GOV.UK asks for an uncropped digital photo for online applications and crops it itself, so upload your original photo there. Use this tool for the 2 printed photos a paper application needs: download the 4 × 6 in sheet and print it at actual size.
Can I wear glasses?
Avoid them unless you have to wear them. If you do, they can't be sunglasses or tinted, and the frames, glare or reflections must not cover your eyes.
