How to get a Indian passport photo that passes
- 01
Take the photo
Stand about 2 ft (60 cm) in front of a plain, light wall. Ask someone to take the photo from about 4 ft (1.2 m) away with the camera at face height. Use daylight from a window in front of you, not overhead light. Take off your glasses, keep both eyes open and your mouth closed.
- 02
Check the crop
The tool finds your face, sizes your head and makes the background plain automatically. If a check turns amber or red, drag or zoom until it turns green.

Questions people ask
What size is an Indian passport photo?
4.5 cm high by 3.5 cm wide in print, and 630 × 810 pixels when digital. Since 1 September 2025, applications need ICAO-compliant photos: a close-up of your head and the top of your shoulders, with your face taking up 80–85% of the photo.
Do I need a photo if I apply at a Passport Seva Kendra?
No. At a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK), your photo is taken at the counter. You need your own photo when applying through an Indian embassy or consulate abroad, or at other centres that ask for one.
What background and clothes should I use?
A plain white background, and dark clothes so you stand out from it. Avoid uniforms and tinted glasses.
Can I wear glasses?
Take them off. The ICAO guidelines ask you to remove glasses to avoid reflections.
How do I print it?
Download the 4 × 6 in sheet and print it at actual size at a photo studio or kiosk. Don't use a plain computer print, and don't sign the photo.
