How to get a Australian passport photo that passes
- 01
Take the photo
Stand about 2 ft (60 cm) in front of a plain, light wall. Ask someone to take the photo from about 4 ft (1.2 m) away with the camera at face height. Use daylight from a window in front of you, not overhead light. Take off your glasses, keep both eyes open and your mouth closed.
- 02
Check the crop
The tool finds your face, sizes your head and makes the background plain automatically. If a check turns amber or red, drag or zoom until it turns green.

Download or print
Download the digital photo for online forms, or the 4 × 6 in sheet to print at a photo kiosk. Print at actual size and cut along the grey lines.

Questions people ask
What size is an Australian passport photo?
35–40 mm wide and 45–50 mm high. Your face, from chin to crown, must measure 32–36 mm. This tool makes the common 35 × 45 mm size.
Can I print it at home?
Not on an inkjet printer. The Passport Office asks for a quality colour print on glossy photo paper. Print the 4 × 6 in sheet at a photo kiosk, which uses the right kind of printer.
Can I edit or brighten the photo?
No. Even small edits, like smoothing skin, brightening the background or removing shadows, can cause the photo to fail biometric checks. Take it against a plain white or light grey wall instead.
How many photos do I need?
Two identical photos. Write your full name in black pen on the back of one of them.
